The tradition teaches that St. Martha, from Palestine, landed at Tarascon where rampant Tarasque then, a terrible monster who lived in the Rhone. The Holy dompta courageously and miraculously the monster. Since then, many pilgrims visit the Collegiate Royal St. Martha, built in his honour near the castle of King Rene, Count of Provence and the Duke of Anjou.
This sanctuary, the main monument of the city, in fact contains the relics and the tomb of St. Martha, in the crypt which was built on the exact location of his house. Note the exceptionally rich artistic, architectural, historical, which contributes to making the Collegiate Royale Sainte Marthe one of the most beautiful churches in Provence.
Castle Tarascon is exceptionally well preserved, it is one of the most beautiful medieval castles in France. This palace, started in 1400 by Louis II of Anjou and completed by his son King René, a majestic appearance feudal. With an impressive defensive system, it is also home to the elegant interior of a princely residence.
Tarascon inspired other tales, especially the famous story of Tartarin de Tarascon, illustrious person born under the pen of Alphonse Daudet in 1872. A house, located in downtown, it is dedicated. Each year Tarascon, during celebrations of the Tarasque, you can see scroll of processions mireillos (women with hairstyles and kept Provence and Arles) and gardians.
