Fontvieille is one of the most famous small towns in Provence, and it is a man shows: Alphonse Daudet. Indeed, one of Fontvieille honours the great man by installing his bust at the center of the crossroads.
Of course, the presence of Daudet does not feel that this place. The city has organized a "route Daudet" which allows a circuit between the favorite places of the writer.
Firstly, the mill Saint-Pierre (or Moulin Ribet), said mill Alphonse Daudet, on a hilltop near the village. The mill, built in 1814, is the windmill the best known of Fontvieille. It is also one of the last to have stopped running in 1915.
Contrary to local legend, Alphonse Daudet has never lived, though wrote about this building:
«A ruin this mill; croulant a debris of stones and old boards, we did not have the wind for years and who was lying, useless as a poet, while everything around on the coast milling and turning prospered all wings.».
Under this mill is a small museum in tribute to the writer of Provence. On the same hill you can see other mills which are part of the group of mills Rome (Sourdon mill, mill Ramet, mill Tissot-Avon), the first of which was built in 1791.
Then the castle Montauban, where Daudet spent the last years of his life, is about a kilometre mill Daudet, and is also part of "Route Daudet." This castle park offers a pleasant exhibition on the writer.
