Cotignac is a village of Green Provence which one of its peculiarities is being dominated by an imposing cliff than 80 metres high. In this landscape outside, an old village of Provence place its alleys and squares moving and offers a unique walk.
The central course, always busy, offers beautiful terraces to refresh or restore in the shade of trees, and shops all around, make it a pleasant place, typical of this cheerful and colorful Provence that you love . Fountains (you will see other across Cotignac) add to the feeling of being in a village in Provence that has lost none of its authenticity.
The alleys of the old village winding between facades seventeenth who stayed with their majestic iron balconies and worked their massive wooden doors. A shady spot of the old neighborhood you will admire a tower topped by a bell dated 1496, a book in ironwork intended to beautify the chime of the clock service, and able to resist the strong attacks of mistral.
The streets lead you to the foot of the cliff where calades you access to cave dwellings and caves decorated with magnificent stalactites. This wonderful scene was carved by a small river, Cassole few millennia, its course before being diverted. The village of Cotignac is therefore de facto built on the site of an ancient waterfall.
Cotignac has always been closely linked to water as evidenced by its 17 fountains (Fontaine des Quatre Saisons, Fontaine de la cascade, La Fouan d’amour, La Fontaine du château ...) or the remnant of imposing a former oil mill, the "Moulin du Piquet."
Another important aspect of Cotignac, its relationship with the Catholic religion during its history. It is the only site where the church attests three appearances, two of the Virgin and Saint Joseph.
On 10 and 11 August 1519, Jean de La Baume had two apparitions of the Virgin Mary who asks for the construction of a church in Cotignac. This is Notre Dame Thanksgiving.
On 7 June 1660, a shepherd named Gaspard Ricard, as he is with his flock on the slopes of Bessillon, is thirsty. A man then appeared to him and said: "I am Joseph, removes the rock and you boiras." Gaspard manages to raise a huge boulder problem without drinking water and fresh and pure. From this apparition born the Monastery of St. Joseph Bessillon.
On 27 October 1637, the Brother Fiacre receives an inner revelation: Anne of Austria has to offer publicly three novenas to the Virgin Mary, then a son will be given. The novenas ending on December 5 following. Nine months later, on September 5, 1638, Louis XIV was born in Saint-Germain en Laye. As a result, February 10, 1638, Louis XIII decided to devote the whole country at Notre Dame. This is the famous "Vow of Louis XIII."
