Barjols

The village of the many fountains

Barjols, dans le Haut VarCrossed by a source that is emerging in many water points, also with the presence of Argens and rivers Fauvery and Water Salée, Barjols was nicknamed the "Tivoli of Provence." Capital of the tannery in the nineteenth century, this period represents the height of Barjols. Traces of this activity still in the area of Real, now renovated, but the last tannery founded in 1660 has filed for bankruptcy in 1983.

Nowadays, Barjols is a leader instead of township of about 250 inhabitants, the multiple activities. His "Circuit des Fontaines" you will discover the 33 fountains and 12 washing still very well preserved.

The fountain located on the main square of Barjols, the fountain Raynouard, named after its donor, hides under its present a sculpture (the work of Jules Récubert) representing a wildlife prélassant in a conch. But the limestone accumulated over time envelope all under a thick hull tuff and foam. This is very natural envelope regularly cut, in order to preserve the balance of the entire monument.

Among the many sights of this beautiful village, include the remains of four walls and doors of the medieval city which are still visible, including the famous "Gate Fainéants." In addition, it should be noted that Captain Place Vincens we find the largest tree of Provence which measures 12 meters in circumference!

Finally, we must warn the War Memorial located Place Victor Hugo, carved by the Barjolais Jules Recubert in 1922, which is one of the most beautiful of France.
