Barbentane is a big village located in the Bouches du Rhone, whose territory is divided between a plain formed by the Rhone and Durance, and the Montagnette.
The village is built on a rocky outcrop overlooking the valley. The rock have always been exploited by different careers, the basement is pierced with multiple galleries, and elsewhere has always Barbentane nowadays two neighbourhoods in large part troglodytes.
At the centre of Barbentane, you can see the Hotel de Ville, which has a characteristic wrought iron tower that houses a bell of 250 kgs. The course is also remarkable for its magnificent trees that you bring a healthy shade during the hot, dry summers.
The streets of the village you will climb to Castle Barbentane, "Le Petit Trianon de Provence", a building which dates from 1674. Classified as a historic monument, it is surrounded by terraces overlooking the Italian and a majestic park, you can visit every day in July, August and September. The castle is still inhabited today by the Marquis de Barbentane.
Other historical monument, the home of the Knights of Malta, a manor house from the twelfth century, restored in 2000. This is undoubtedly the most beautiful house Barbentane !
Buildings also remarkable, the Porte Calendale (or Sarrasine) built in the ninth century at the same time that the ramparts, but also the Tour Anglica, a square tower of 28 meters high and 10 metres later.
It ends with a round turret, or Tourillon, topped by a flag with the motto "Piu forté nel aversita" (More strong in adversity) and the arms Papales (Tiare, plume, keys).
It is classified as an historical monument. Frederic Mistral has sung in his poem "Lis Isclo d'Or" in 1875.
