Thoronet Abbey

A Cistercian abbey in the South of France

Abbaye du ThoronetFounded in 1146 in the Var hinterland, the Thoronet Abbey is one of the most remarkable abbeys in the South of FRance from the Cistercian order.

Purity proportions, simplicity volumes, rigour of the equipment stones and absolute counting of architecture gives it an austere beauty and without artifice consistent with the spirituality that promotes the rule of St. Bernard.

The soul of the monument

FontaineTreasury art and architecture, it is the most austere of "three Cistercian Sisters of Provence." Held responsible for a strong historical and spiritual identity, its state of preservation, the quality of its reception and visit and its development will leave an indelible memory.

The monument

The abbey Thoronet was founded in 1146 by Cistercian monks of Tourtour in a wild Var. His convent buildings organized around a cloister the solid arches. All harmony in this building, devoid of any decoration carved, based on the interplay of architectural volumes. It is a Romanesque style austere, very geometric. With the exception of the vault "palm" of the house, the barrel vault queen is here, the church in the cellar through the dormitory.

Severely damaged by rearrangements occurred in the 18th century and then by the revolutionary destruction, the abbey Thoronet was gradually taken over by the state from 1854. Today found the ruins, she has regained its original appearance through substantial restoration work carried out by Antoine-Henry Revoil and Jules Formigé. (Source National Monuments)
